Not-So-Chaotic Decision Making

Even though I only voiced out an opinion once during that semi-chaotic decision making process for our test, I felt like I handled the conflict with more of a compromise rather than a withdrawal. The combination of ideas integrating into one decision felt like the most sensible thing. But to be more reasonable, there were so many ideas being put out there so it was really hard to combine what everyone wanted. Just because ideas were approved and denied back to back didn't make me want to withdraw from the decision making. I basically participated in eliminating or sticking to these ideas by raising my hand. My grade is affected by the final decision so might as well participate in the poll.

I think collaborating feels like the most sensible method to use because the decision isn't only for me, but for the entire class. It would have been nice to form small groups first but since we were under time pressure we just skipped this process. Although that step was skipped, we still ended up combining two sets of ideas: extra credit and dropping the lowest grade, to create a combination that everyone seemed to agree on (unless others were forced into agreeing because people were just worried about time constraints). It felt like everyone was competing to win in the beginning and then eventually collaborating which turned into a seemingly win-win outcome.

I did have doubts that we will not be able to come up with a decision on time but having a leader made it more organizable and put the process more at ease.

  1. Collaboration, i think is the best approach in decision making, however because of our time constraint i must rule it out. Collaboration with such a large group can take hours. Especially, when trying to get 100% vote. But i do agree that it can be the most affective. It can also make the most people satisfied with the decision.

  2. With such a huge group of people, collaboration is definitely the way to go. It is just going to be impossible for everyone to agree 100% to the same EXACT thing without any compromise. I think due to the time constraints, people definitely understood this as the clock was ticking and time was running out. Instead of trying to compete with each other, we did compromise and did the best we could to come up with something everyone can agree on.

  3. I personally liked having someone guide us. It felt organized to me too, but I think collaboration was the way to go. If we were in small groups, I think we would have had a better shot at bargaining with each other and persuading everyone to come to an agreement more easily.

  4. It is difficult to come up with a decision under such a large group of people. Everyone has their own interests so we have to compete with each other that would make even harder for us to get results. the compromising method is a good way to approach.

  5. first of all, I just want to say that im glad we were able to reach a consensus! God knows everyone was realllyyyyy worried that we would not be able to do it due to the time constraint. I think this is an important point that we have to work together quickly and effectively to reach a decision that is beneficial for the most number of people. I think that the combination of dropping the lowest test grade and having an extra credit assignment was a good thing since it made everyone happy. some people wanted the lowest grade to be dropped while others thought that the extra credit would help them and by meshing the two in one, we made everyone happy! : )

  6. I agree that our leader helped make the decision process more organized, it's a good thing she stepped in. I also thought for a moment that we were not going to come up with a decision for the second test, but fortunately we did.

  7. I agree with the idea of having formed small groups. It would have been much more time efficient. Getting everyone's ideas individually, was too time consuming. But other than that, we were able to decide on an idea that everyone was satisfied with.

  8. It is hard to make a decision where there are 60 people involved. It always brings conflict and dissatisfaction of others. Therefore, I also believe that the collaboration is the best method to handle the conflict. By bargaining and negotiation, the students would have the opportunity to manage disputes.

  9. I also handled the process with a compromising decision. Though I might have wanted something different from majority, I decided to stick with the option that works best for the class as a whole. I believe in this type of situation, that was the best and most fair approach!
